.The learning journey never ends so sometimes it pays not to focus on the destination. Instead, enjoy the ride.

However, reinventing yourself can be a real challenge at any age but as you get older it can be even more daunting.

In our thirties, we were told to expect that we would probably change careers an average of three times in our working life. With people living and working longer in the 21st century, it is a safe bet it will be at least four these days. The chances are that at some time you will find yourself well and truly outside your comfort zone.

The learning journey slide

The slide above ‘The Learning Journey’ is from a Brain-Based Coaching Conversations course one of our advisors completed a while ago. It reminds us that true learning involves discomfort. The challenge is to let go of control. Instead, acknowledge that you’re not the most knowledgeable person in the room. Commit to learning something new from the ground up.

When you let yourself do that, the benefits are incredible. You don’t lose any of the familiar old skills. You simply augment what you have and become a more useful person.

So when you get the chance to be the dumbest person in the room. Enjoy the anxiety for a little bit – then jump into it!
